Hit the Road Dude meme: State Property origin and full lines

Hit the Road Dude is the State Property clip from a TikTok posted by @bird28thegr8 on August 21, 2025: a driver in a white pickup tells two people fishing his pond to leave, repeats "State?" and calls it private property. It spread as lip-dubs in 2025 and returned as AI remakes in October 2026.

Reference still, not a clip made by this studio.

The short answer

Hit the Road Dude is the same clip as the State Property meme. It comes from a TikTok posted by @bird28thegr8 on August 21, 2025, captioned "Angry grandpa kicks me out my fishing spot". Two people fishing at a pond are confronted by a driver in a white pickup. They say they thought the pond was state property. He repeats "State?", says it is private property and tells them to leave.

Know Your Meme files it as Lock 'Em Up / State Property and reports that the video passed 13.7 million views in roughly three weeks. In October 2026 it came back as a wave of AI edits that put other people, pets and characters in the driver seat.

August 24, 2025: the earliest known lip-dub remake.

August 31, 2025: green-screen "lock 'em up" edits begin.

The lines, in order

Transcripts vary a little from repost to repost, but the beats are always the same:

  • The fisherman: "I thought it was state property."
  • The driver, slowly: "State?" (sometimes twice)
  • The correction: it is private property, not state property
  • The send-off: "Hit the road, dude."
  • Later in the full video: someone told the owner, and the answer was "lock 'em up"

Why it has so many names

People search for the clip by whichever line stuck with them. State Property comes from the fisherman's excuse and the driver's disbelief. Private Property and "This is private property" come from the correction. Hit the Road Dude comes from the send-off, and Lock 'Em Up from the line near the end that Know Your Meme uses as the entry name.

It is not related to the song Hit the Road Jack. The phrase "hit the road" is old slang for "leave", and the meme uses it as the last word in an argument.

Why it works so well as an AI remake

The original is one fixed shot: a face in a truck window, a short exchange and a pause that everybody recognizes. That makes it easy to swap the driver and keep the joke. The October 2026 wave did exactly that, with a cat at the wheel, characters from games, and people casting their friends.

Most of those remakes are only funny because the timing survives: the long "State?", then the flat, final send-off. Anything that changes the order or rushes the pause loses the joke.

What this studio makes, and what it does not

This studio makes a 15-second vertical remake of the pickup-window exchange from one photo. Your face, a friend's (with their permission) or your pet's takes the driver seat. The lines are spoken in a newly generated voice.

It does not use, name or recreate the man in the original video, who is a private person. A result is a comedy remake, not the original recording and not evidence of a real event. Please do not post it as either.
